Songwriting Discovery Workshop 6 week Series Led by Lorraine Ferro
21 Maple Ave
Rockaway, NJ 07866
The Songwriting Discovery Series will focus on assignments and songs you are creating. The focus here is on discovering who you are as a songwriter and what you uniquely have to say, while applying some songwriting techniques that will stimulate and stretch your creative muscles. We’ll be giving and receiving feedback on our work because we learn to be better writers when we realize what we think about someone else’s art.
Songwriting takes more than writing skill or playing an instrument well. In fact, sometimes it doesn’t take those things at all – but it DOES take WILLINGNESS, and Daring to Suck, and an attitude that celebrates your own accomplishments and those of your classmates!
There will be some challenges, and when the time comes that you’re stuck and don’t know where to go next in the middle of a song, we’ll all have a great time “writing ourselves out of a corner!”
In this six week workshop series I’ll cover some basics, like structure, rhyme scheme, good lyric writing, and introduce terms like “prosody” which are important when you’re creating a melody from your lyrics. We’ll explore how to get an idea worth writing about, and I’ll give you some great songwriting exercises to practice. If you’re a musician, I’ll support you in learning how to find the words for the music you play. If you’re a singer, I’ll help you sing what you want to say. If you’re a poet, I’ll give you the tools to turn your poems into lyrics, and if you write lyrics only, I’ll teach you some tricks about getting a melody and music that you’ll love for those words. You’ll be working within and then outside your own area of musical or lyrical experience, in a class environment that encourages teamwork and collaboration.
